Barnums Pick Up First Win of 2024

The Bridgeport Barnums defeated Waterbury 5-1 on Sunday to pick up their first win of the 2024 campaign.

The Barnums got on the board in the bottom of the first inning.

With two outs and one out, Joey D'Elia lined a two-run single to put the Barnums ahead 2-0.

Bridgeport added single runs in the second, third and fourth innings.

Waterbury's lone run came in the fourth.

In the second, Pablo Aquino reached first on a wild pitch after he swung through strike three. The next batter, Andrew Fortunato walked.

After a wild pitch moved Aquino to third, he came in to score on a ground ball double play.

The Barnums run in the third inning came on a throwing error by the Waterbury pitcher which scored John Heitzman, who was singled earlier in the inning. One of two hits for Heitzman on the day.

In the fourth, with runners on the corners, Luke Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Aquino.

On the mound, Joey Sanguiolo threw the first four innings and picked up the win. He allowed just one run on five hits while striking out four and walking two.

Fortunato came on and threw three shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out two, to pick up the save.

Bridgeport will be back in action on Wednesday at 5:45pm vs Hamden at Seaside Park.
